Maine Street Grill - Standish, Maine
The Maine Street Grill in Standish is located in the historic Thompson House. Built in 1783 the house originally had two stories and was built on a 30 acre parcel granted to Rev. Thompson. A third story was added in 1845 by the Reverend's son William to be used as a tavern and included a floating dance floor. It is possible that the dance floor is one of only three such dance floors remaining in the United States. It is also rumored that George Washington may have danced here.
The building has a wide range of reported paranormal activity. Cooks in the kitchen have experienced utensils being manipulated by unseen hands and their clothes being tugged. A radio in the kitchen has been reported to turn on and off by itself and even change stations. The fryolator experiences unexplained temperature changes and boxes have flown off of shelves. There is also a door on the first floor that have been reported to open and close on it's own. People have reported being touched by a Native American servant woman who is believed to have been murdered on the third floor. A cold spot and the feeling of being hugged by a child have also been reported on this floor. People have reported being pushed on the stairs and what has been described as a growl has been heard in the basement. Other reported activity included hearing doors slam, muffled voices, children giggling, lights being manipulated and footsteps. We were also told of people having seen apparitions, both in detail and as an outline of a person.
We placed our video cameras throughout the building where the apparitions have been reported as well as on the door that opens on it's own. We also placed trail cameras, one pointed at the cash register where an apparition has been seen and one on the third floor. We split up with rotating teams exploring the building and one monitoring the video cameras.
We were unable to document anything we could explain, we did however have some interesting personal experiences. It is important to note that these experiences cannot be considered evidence. On both the second and third floors lights were turned off with no explanation. On the second floor this was witnessed by four team members, two on the second floor and two on the first floor. On the third floor and investigator conducting an EVP session in one the rooms, left the light on and stepped out to get additional equipment upon turning around, the light in the room was off. On the second floor we heard a door slam on the first floor, upon investigating we were unable to find a source for the sound. All in all we had a very interesting investigation in a building with a very rich history and we look forward to returning.
