The Opera House at Boothbay Harbor - Boothbay Harbor, Maine

Picture

Originally known as the Pythian Opera House the building was commissioned by the Pythian Hall Company in 1894 and was constructed in 70 days at the cost of $14,000. The auditorium and a downstairs room were rented to the town while the upstairs was used as a meeting hall for the Masons and the Knights of Pythias. Some of the uses for the building throughout the years have included a bed and breakfast, YMCA, movie theater and an ice skating rink as well as town meetings and political rallies. Eventually the organizations that used the Opera House moved into their own facilities and in the 1970s the building was sold. After being sold it was converted into a mall for small shops that never drew the crowds the owners expected. Part of the building was used as a recycling center before housing a restaurant and antique shop. The Opera House was in danger of being sold to developers or leveled for a parking lot. The Opera House was saved by a group of local citizens and donors and was added to the National Registry of Historic Places in December of 2008.

The room on the second floor that was used as the meeting hall for the Knights of Pythias is said to be haunted. People have reported feeling a presence here and the piano has been reported to play by itself. Unexplained footsteps and objects being moved have also been reported.

We were unable to document any evidence of paranormal activity at the Opera House. We did get high EMF readings while on the second floor. These readings were constant and steady with little to no fluctuation. While we were unable to locate the exact source, we do not feel these readings were paranormal in nature.
